The Big Idea:
Resources are a critical aspect in determining where and how people live.
The Essential Question:
What causes a person or a group of people to need resources and how can they be fairly distributed?
The Challenge:
After determining the collective resources available, identify the resources needed by another group of people and create a plan for acquiring and fairly distributing the needed resources.
Guiding Questions:
1. What resources does our community have that can only be easily used once?
2. How can these resources be recycled, reused or re-purposed?
3. Who might need these re-purposed items?
2. Students will use the Internet and other resources to locate information about local recycling programs and what items are easily recycled. Students should also make a list of items that are not easily recycled or accepted at their local recycling facility. (Arizona Recycling Program with list of recyclable and non recyclable items Parks & Sons Recycling - http://parksandsons.com/AguaFria_Recycling.html)
Small Group:
1. Using the list of items that are not easily recycled, students would work in groups of 3 - 4 to list ways to re-purpose those items.
2. Students would need to document the steps needed to re-purpose the items.
3. Students would create a video showing the steps needed to create their re-purposed item using a Flip Camera and video editing software.
GROUP CHECK-POINT:
Each group should write up a rationale for their re-purposed item. Groups should include why they chose their item, why it would be useful re-purposed, and who would benefit from their re-purposed item.
Post Activity - Students will share their video with the class and show their actual re-purposed item or a scale mock-up item and it’s uses. The videos will also be shared online for family and community members to view.
Academic Standards:
Describe the role of recycling and waste management.
• Identify materials that can be recycled in the community.
• Describe methods that could be used to reuse materials for new products.
